• Featured musical performer Alden Ikeda will play hours of improvisational good times jazz music beginning at 7 PM. Alden has played with local and national greats from Milo Fine to Don Cherry, and on the First Friday in March, he will perform in the beautiful 7-story Tilsner atrium. • While enjoying the music, check out the paintings of visual artist Amelia Gluba. Subjects range from still lifes to collage/assemblage works inspired by the work of Betty Saar and Joseph Cornell.
• Amy Bell will exhibit both finished works and works in-progress for Spring Art Crawl 2012. Paintings include abstracts and new explorations into portraiture (including a seed portrait, to satisfy your State Fair art needs in winter).

Arizona I, Tom McGregor, Oil on Linen, 12×16

Tom McGregor and Jerri Jo Brandt will be opening their studio for the March 2 Lowertown First Friday. This is the first time they have had an open house in their studio. McGregor says that it is fun see the renewed energy emerging from the Lowertown art district and a thrill to be taking part in this event.

McGregor and Brandt  have just returned from the Winter Plein Air Event put on by the Grand Marais Art Colony on West Bearskin Lake a mile from the Canadian border. Getting to this remote location was inded a challenge but the vistas were breath taking making the the effort well worth it. McGregor and Brandt will be showing paintings from this trip. McGregor will also be showing a series of paintings of Arizona. This is a unique group of paintings in that they were originally painted on location 4 years ago; before McGregor felt he had a full grasp of plein air painting. Recently he brought them out of storage with the intention of breathing new life into them. Most of them have been completely repainted with little more than the composition of the original paintings still showing.

Traveling Light

The painting shown here, by Barbara Evan, has changed many times in the past three years, but it’s finally finished. It started out as “Connor Progression”—Connor being my then-newly-born grandson. Its name is now “Traveling Light.”

Barbara’s studio will be open Friday, March 2, from 6 to 9:00 pm as part of Lowertown First Fridays (LFF). She is in the Jax Building at 4th and Wacouta. Several other artist buildings in St Paul’s Lowertown will also be open, including the Tilsner, where an excellent band will be playing, and the Northwestern, which is not always open for LFF (be sure to take the elevator to the 7th floor and see Tom McGregor’s incredibly beautiful landscapes). There is a variety of good art to be seen in the other buildings as well.

Tom Dunn is an international award-winning photographer specializing in fine art, marketing and business-branding photography.  His studio and home are both located in the Lowertown district of downtown Saint Paul, Minnesota, and his artwork is on permanent display at numerous local Twin Cities businesses.  Tom will be exhibiting black and white images from his extensive travels at home and abroad during the Lowertown First Friday on February 3, 2012 in the JAX Building, 253 4th St., Studio 204, between 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in downtown St. Paul.  The collection is a series of photographs created in Slovenia, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria and Minnesota. Dunn’s calls this artistic focus “urban portraiture,” in which he captures street scenes and everyday life.

DeAnne L Parks will open her Jax 306 studio to participate in her final Lowertown First Friday before the Art Crawl in late April. Many of her works will be heading out for exhibitions after the February 3rd LFF event. Those that remain will be “rebirthed” (painted over) to become new creations, as is part of DeAnne’s process.
